Extreme Weather Response Program

The Extreme Weather Response Program provides extra low barrier emergency shelter for people who are homeless, both males and females, from November 1st to March 31st.

The EWR is a day-day emergency shelter program where the decision to open will be made by noon each day.

When is it activated?

When the Gateway Shelter is full and conditions deemed severe enough to present substantial threat to the life and/or health of homeless persons. For example temperature of -1C or less, a significant accumulation of new snow fall may be deemed a substantial threat, a prolonged period of heavy rainfall during the winter months may be deemed a substantial threat.

How many spaces are available?

The EWR has the capacity for up to 10 spaces. 5 men’s mats and 5 women’s mats (will be adjusted for gender/trans-gender when required).

Operating hours are from 9:00pm-8:30am.

What other resources are available to registered clients?

Admissions

Registration is between 9:00pm and 11:00pm

There is no fee for the program. Shelter programs are funded by BC Housing.

Gateway Support Services: Clients are eligible to access the Gateway Shelter when beds become available.

Upper Room Mission: Free meals are available Monday to Friday.

Work BC Employment Program: Clients are eligible to access the program.

Homeless Outreach Provider Program: Clients are eligible to access the program.
