REnEW employment training program

REnEW (Residential Energy and Efficiency Works) is an innovative employment training program that specializes in energy efficiency.  REnEW prepares individuals with barriers to employment for entry-level construction, building maintenance, or use as a basis for further education. REnEW is a two month program that includes classroom and field training.  Participants will learn:

  • job readiness training workshops,
  • basic construction methods,
  • skills to make homes more energy efficient,
  • hands-on training including draft proofing, caulking, upgrading insulation, and installing water-efficient devices,
  • how to develop an employment action plan,
  • WCB Occupational First Aid Level 1, CSTS, WHMIS & Fall Protection.

Upon completion of REnEW, graduates get tools, safety equipment, a tool-belt, and ongoing support to start their new job.

Program's Philosophy

REnEW’s approach maintains the Triple Bottom Line framework (social, environment, and economic).  Socially, REnEW is directed to supporting those in our community experiencing barriers to employment.  Additionally, construction sites are selected on their social purpose.  Past projects have included recovery houses, shelters, and affordable housing.  Environmentally, the program’s construction training teaches best-practice on sustainable and environmentally conscious construction.  Lastly, by increasing the employability for those out-of-work or under-employed, REnEW helps financially by assisting people acquire work and a steady pay-cheque.  Furthermore, REnEW contributes in creating a robust and skilled labour force for local businesses to hire.

Quick Points

Eligibility: Experience is not required as we will support you along the way.  But you must have an interest in the trades, a customer service orientation, and a "can do" attitude.  Applicants also need to be:
  • experiencing barriers to employment
  • not eligible for employment insurance,
  • can commit to the whole program program.
