Forensic Outreach Services

Forensic Outreach Services is an outreach program of the John Howard Society for clients of the Forensic Psychiatric Services Commission (FPSC). Forensic Outreach Services supports individuals, 18 years+, who have come into contact with the law but suffer from serious and persistent mental illness and were found Not Criminally Responsible on account of a Mental Disorder (NCRMD). The objective of the Forensic Outreach Worker is to provide resources and support in order to assist the client to maintain their mental health recovery and to successfully reintegrate into society.

A treatment team works to manage the risk of the clients living in the community. The Forensic Outreach Worker (FOW) is one member of this team that also includes a psychiatrist, a Forensic Liaison Officer, and a Community Nurse. The FOW visits clients in the community to monitor for signs of mental health decompensation and assist with psychosocial rehabilitation. Functioning in an outreach role, the Forensic Outreach Services provides an integral support to the treatment team in the ability to react in a timely manner to the ensure clients’ health and public safety.

FOW support includes:

• Meeting one-on-one on a scheduled and regular basis,
• Supporting pro-social and recreational activities to facilitate rehabilitation and reintegration
• Assistance with activities of daily living (ADL) and promoting independent life skills, 
• Assistance with acquiring and maintaining housing,
• Assistance with employment/occupational pursuits,
• Monitoring legal conditions and orders,
• Connection to pertinent resources such as mental health, treatment, and others.
