Executive Director

The John Howard Society of Victoria is a non-profit community based organization which has developed and delivered a wide variety of programs and services in the Victoria area since 1935. Today these programs include a halfway house, transitional housing, employment programs, community justice program, youth mentoring program, prison services programs and a community garden project. We are searching for a new Executive Director to take over this well established community organization.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and has overall responsibility for the general management of the organization, in accordance with the strategies, plans and policies approved by the board of directors. The Executive Director provides leadership to the Society by working closely with the board to establish an inspiring and practical long term vision; by guiding, coaching and mentoring the staff team; by ensuring that the finances of the Society are in order; and by overseeing the operations of all programs to ensure that they meet the high standards for which JHS Victoria has become known. The Executive Director is the primary spokesperson for the Society and will actively maintain and build upon relationships with JHS Victoria stakeholders which include clients, staff, community partners, government, and business organizations.

The ideal candidate is an experienced leader who has been responsible for overseeing a multi-program organization operating in partnership with the community, and with close ties with government partners as well as other external stakeholders. The Executive Director will be recognized as a credible, influential and reliable professional, who can be trusted, as well as someone who is motivated to maintain, build, and expand an already successful organization. He or she will have worked closely with Boards of Directors to guide strategic development and set priorities.

The successful candidate must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in a publicly visible, autonomous and caring workplace, while overseeing a diverse portfolio of programs. Superior leadership, interpersonal and communication skills, and a personal values alignment with the organization are all hallmarks of a suitable candidate. In addition, he/she is a genuine people person who knows how to build great relationships, uncover new ideas, and inspire people to excel. The Executive Director is someone with the highest level of professional ethics who is passionate about providing the highest levels of services to the people we serve.

Qualifications include:

1. Minimum of five year management experience including financial and human resources management, preferably in a community based, not for profit organization.

2. Masters degree in the criminal justice or social science disciplines is preferred however an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

3. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in criminal and social justice issues.

4. Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with various levels of government and the community sector.

5. Demonstrated experience in developing and managing program and overall agency budgets with funding from multiple sources.

6. Effective management, negotiation, communication, problem solving, decision making and inter-personal skills.

7. Ability to function independently under pressure while managing multiple concurrent projects and deadlines, including effectively managing crisis or emergency situations.

8. Ability to maintain values and philosophies with respect to criminal justice issues that are compatible with John Howard Society principles, values, mission, and vision statements.

9. Employment is subject to criminal records and vulnerable persons check. 10. Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

Position: Full time

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications; current salary range is $74,000-$78,000
